Lipstein is an Israeli-born artist, painter, and printmaker based in Ireland. Born in Tel Aviv, he moved to Ireland in 1983 and graduated from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin, with a BA in Fine Art Printmaking in 2006 and an MA in Fine Art in 2009. Following his undergraduate studies, he received the CAP Foundation Award, and over the years has been recognized with additional awards for both printmaking and painting. After an earlier career in natural medicine, Lipstein dedicated himself to printmaking and painting, developing a practice rooted in mythology, symbolism, and the visual language of dreams. Drawing on decades of recorded dream journals, his paintings and prints combine mythical narratives with atmospheric imagery to explore the relationship between the subconscious, memory, and human experience. While he continues to work in printmaking, his recent practice has focused primarily on oil painting. A long-standing member of Graphic Studio Dublin, Lipstein has exhibited extensively in Ireland and internationally. His work is held in numerous public and private collections across Ireland, Europe, the United States, Israel, and Australia.

Exhibition Statement

Intimate Landscapes brings together a body of paintings and prints that explore the relationship between place, memory, and imagination. Drawing from the landscapes of Donegal, Dublin, County Kildare, and locations transformed through memory, Daniel Lipstein creates environments that move between direct observation and inner experience. Working across painting and printmaking, Lipstein builds each work through layered surfaces that carry both physical presence and emotional weight. His recurring visual language—fish, levitation, birds, and solitary figures—does not function as illustration but as symbolic forms that invite multiple interpretations. As the artist explains: "Imaginary or real, each painting and etching expresses intimacy, either of a connection to a place or of an idea, which the place serves in my effort to express it visually." Throughout the exhibition, fish suggest ancient knowledge, the unconscious, and the unknown, while moments of levitation suggest transcendence and the emotional experience of being within a landscape rather than simply observing it. Reflecting on his approach, Lipstein writes: "Levitation is another element in my work, which I explore in some of these paintings. It marks transcendence and inserts into a landscape my intimate feeling of the experience, either being there or painting it, or both." Rather than documenting places, Intimate Landscapes presents landscapes as psychological and symbolic spaces, where observation, memory, and imagination merge into a deeply personal visual world.
