Exhibition Statement

Angusta Porta takes its title from the Gospel of Matthew (7:13–14), in which the “narrow gate” describes a difficult and disciplined path. For Hedi Ben Nun, the metaphor relates directly to the self-imposed constraints of his painting practice: working from direct observation, in natural light, and at the actual scale of the objects before him. Rather than restricting the work, these rules become a framework for experimentation and the continual search for pictorial solutions. Light—and its absence—forms a point of departure for the paintings. Light reveals the surfaces of things, while the objects themselves give light a visible presence; time, similarly, becomes perceptible through matter. The works repeatedly focus on forms containing openings, cavities and concealed spaces: seed pods splitting to expose their interiors, electrical sockets, navels, and spaces hidden between leaves. Ben Nun approaches painting as a form of looking shaped by the accumulated memory of painting itself. Visual encounters in the studio evoke images and symbols inherited from art history—forms transmitted between artists, transformed by successive generations, and brought into new relationships through the act of painting. The narrow opening thus becomes not simply a restriction, but an invitation: an understated point of entry through which sustained attention can lead to expansion and discovery.
