About the Artist ↓

Michael (Mikheil) Makharadze is a Georgian contemporary artist based in Batumi whose practice combines painting with philosophical and conceptual inquiry. He studied philosophy at Shota Rustaveli State University in Batumi from 2013 to 2018 before turning his primary focus to art. Makharadze’s work explores the human condition through themes of identity, belief, memory, absurdity, and the search for meaning. Drawing on archetypal figures, mythology, existential philosophy, and contemporary urban experience, he creates symbolic narratives in which personal experience intersects with broader questions of existence and perception. Since 2017, Makharadze has participated in exhibitions in Georgia and internationally. His solo exhibitions include *Reflection* (2019), *Seeing the Sun* (2023), and *Blue of Thought* (2026), presented in Batumi.

Exhibition Statement

Sun Vision explores the individual within a socio-ethical dimension. The visual language of the series relies on archaic, primitivist forms and an earthy palette of yellow, ochre, red, and brown, connecting the depicted themes to a primordial environment. At the center of the series is the nature of truth and the illusory quality of its pursuit, a search that often leads to conflict. Drawing on a dualistic view of human existence, the opposition between culture and nature, and Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the works ask to what extent humanity has truly emerged from the primitive cave of thought. Biblical and Buddhist motifs, reflections on faith, and the human desire to escape a world of shadows recur throughout the series. The title Sun Vision carries a dual meaning: both a supernatural revelation, a vision of truth sent by the sun, and a hallucination produced by intense solar heat, in which perception transforms reality.
