About the Artist ↓

Rachel Nemesh is an Israeli painter whose work moves between figuration and abstraction, exploring personal and collective memory, the vulnerability of the human body, and an ongoing engagement with art history. Her paintings bring together images and fragments from different periods, allowing past and present, private experience and cultural memory to coexist within the same pictorial space. Nemesh studied photography at WIZO and art at the Mishkan School of Art and HaKubia in Jerusalem. Over the years, she has continued her artistic studies with artists in Israel and abroad, both in person and through international programs. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Israel and internationally. She lives and works in the Jezreel Valley, Israel.

Exhibition Statement

As One brings together 20 large-scale figurative and expressive paintings exploring the relationship between Rachel Nemesh and her 95-year-old mother, an Auschwitz survivor. The works are based on staged encounters situated within the artist's home and psychological space. The paintings portray the relationship between two elderly women from a personal, intimate, and distinctly female perspective, while closely observing the ageing body. Traumas passed between generations are embodied in scars of both body and mind and are intertwined with Nemesh's personal history. These experiences are considered alongside the artist's sustained engagement with the history of art, allowing personal and inherited memory to enter into dialogue with the broader visual tradition.
