Exhibition Statement

All The Things I Have Seen — Bar Yerushalmi In Flaneuse, Tamar Roded Shabtay turns her attention to the landscape of her hometown of Arad, particularly the Maof neighbourhood, whose prefabricated architecture developed in response to the large wave of immigration from the former Soviet Union during the 1990s. Rather than documenting the neighbourhood naturalistically, Roded Shabtay approaches the landscape through vision, memory and bodily experience. As she wanders through the area, impressions of movement and observation are reconstructed through painterly processes of addition, removal, mixing and stretching. Architectural fragments, desert light, figures, vegetation and material traces converge as overlapping layers of perception. The works move between past and present and resist a fixed narrative, presenting the neighbourhood through shifting spatial and temporal viewpoints. In contrast to these changing perspectives, a related work based on Arad's characteristic flint stone turns attention toward the material from which the city itself is formed.
