Charleslouis Azuakor

Claimed

Nigeria

Charleslouis Azuakor K. is a Nigerian visual artist from Onitsha, Anambra State. Trained in Computer Science, his artistic practice draws on African visual traditions, particularly Nsibidi, Uli, Adinkra, and other symbolic systems that have historically served as vehicles for communication, memory, and cultural identity. Working primarily with charcoal, graphite, and acrylic, Azuakor approaches art as a means of observation, documentation, preservation, and cultural critique. Central to his practice is Nchikota, a distinctive visual language that integrates colour, pattern, inscription, ideograph, and symbol into layered contemporary compositions. Through this approach, he reinterprets traditional African knowledge systems within a modern context, exploring questions of heritage, identity, and collective memory. His work has been exhibited and published in Nigeria and internationally, and he received the NACOSS Most Creative Student of the Year Award in 2017.
