Biography

Gal Nir Freisager (b. 2001, Shimshit, Israel) is a multidisciplinary artist and painter living and working in Kiryat Tivon and Metula. Her practice emerges from experiences of displacement, instability, and pain in childhood, and from the search for protection, home, and healing. A central figure in her work is her grandmother, whose care provided stability during a difficult period in her life. Following her grandmother’s death on Freisager’s birthday, her image developed into an icon-like maternal presence in the artist’s work, carrying ideas of memory, salvation, and the transformation of personal pain. Fabric and textiles have accompanied Freisager’s practice from its beginnings. An early engagement with making clothes developed into sewing, knitting, and weaving within painting itself. Rather than functioning as a neutral support, fabric becomes a bodily material shaped by folds, tension, light, shadow, and memory. In recent years, Freisager has expanded her practice beyond painting into sculpture, video, installation, and performance. Influenced by church architecture in Italy and her studies at a school of sacred art in Florence, she works with trapezoidal canvases whose diagonal lines direct the gaze upward. Groups of six canvases can form enveloping hexagonal structures, giving painting an architectural and ritual dimension and creating spaces in which the material and spiritual, personal and sublime, meet.
