Terms of Use
Last updated: 24 September 2026
These Terms of Use explain the conditions that apply when using Global Catalogue Raisonné ("GCR") and when artists, rightsholders, contributors, or other users provide artworks, images, biographical information, exhibition records, documents, or other material for inclusion in GCR.
1. About GCR
Global Catalogue Raisonné is a digital documentation platform dedicated to creating and maintaining structured records of artists, artworks, exhibitions, institutions, and related art historical information.
GCR is intended as a documentation and reference resource. It is not an art authentication authority, appraisal service, gallery, auction house, or legal authority on ownership or attribution.
2. Artist and contributor accounts
Artists and other contributors may provide information and materials directly to GCR or through an account made available for catalogue management.
Contributors are responsible for providing information that they reasonably believe to be accurate and for notifying GCR when significant corrections are required.
3. Ownership and copyright
Artists and other rightsholders retain ownership of their artworks and all copyright and other intellectual property rights that they hold in images, texts, documents, and other material submitted to GCR.
Providing material to GCR does not transfer copyright or ownership of that material to GCR.
GCR retains rights in its own software, database structure, interface, design, branding, original editorial material, and other material created by GCR.
4. Permission to use submitted material
By submitting or providing material for inclusion in GCR, the contributor grants GCR a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, reproduce, resize, format, display, and otherwise process that material as reasonably necessary to create, maintain, operate, preserve, and display the relevant catalogue and related GCR records.
This licence does not transfer ownership to GCR and does not give GCR the right to sell or commercially license an artist's artwork images to third parties as standalone images.
Where a catalogue or record is private, GCR will not intentionally publish that private material as part of the public GCR website unless the artist or authorised contributor chooses or agrees to make it public.
5. Rights to submitted material
Contributors should only provide material that they own or are authorised to provide to GCR.
Where an artwork image was created by a photographer or another third party, contributors should provide appropriate credit information and ensure that they have permission for the image to be used for catalogue documentation where such permission is required.
6. Private and public catalogues
An artist catalogue may begin as a private catalogue and may be developed and reviewed before publication.
When a catalogue is made public, its public records may be viewed, linked to, indexed by search engines, cached, quoted, or archived by third-party services outside GCR's control.
GCR can remove material from its own public website, but it cannot guarantee the removal of copies, search-engine caches, links, or archives independently created by third parties while the material was publicly available.
7. Corrections and updates
GCR is designed as a living record. Artists and authorised contributors may request reasonable corrections or updates to their catalogue information as their work and documentation develop.
GCR may also correct formatting, spelling, categorisation, or other administrative information where necessary to maintain consistent and accurate records.
8. Removal and deletion
Artists and authorised contributors may request the removal of individual submitted works or other submitted material from their GCR catalogue. They may also request that a catalogue they control be withdrawn from public access.
Requests for deletion of personal information and account data are handled in accordance with the GCR Privacy Policy.
Some information may remain temporarily in secure backups or technical records after deletion from the live service. GCR may also retain limited information where reasonably necessary for security, dispute resolution, legal obligations, or maintaining the integrity of its records.
9. Historical and third-party records
GCR may document publicly available information concerning exhibitions, museums, institutions, publications, auction activity, and other historical or public art records.
Such documentation may originate from sources other than an artist or contributor and may therefore be treated differently from material submitted directly by an artist.
10. Accuracy and research
GCR aims to document information carefully, but art historical, biographical, provenance, exhibition, market, and attribution information may be incomplete, disputed, subsequently corrected, or subject to different interpretations.
Users should independently verify information where it is being relied upon for financial, legal, authentication, attribution, acquisition, or other consequential decisions.
11. Availability of the service
GCR is an evolving digital project. Features, catalogue structures, presentation, and services may change as the platform develops.
GCR does not guarantee uninterrupted availability of the website or any particular feature and may modify or discontinue features where reasonably necessary.
12. Acceptable use
Users must not use GCR to upload unlawful material, deliberately provide false or misleading information, interfere with the operation or security of the service, or infringe the rights of another person.
13. Changes to these Terms
These Terms may be updated as GCR develops. The current version and its last-updated date will be published on this page.
Where a change materially affects the rights granted by an artist or contributor in relation to submitted material, GCR will take reasonable steps to make the updated terms available before relying on the material change.
14. Contact
Questions about these Terms, copyright, catalogue material, or removal requests can be directed to GCR through the contact details provided on the website.
