Biography

Nina Chalaf (b. 2001) is an artist from Jatt in Israel’s Triangle region, born to an Egyptian mother and an Israeli father. She spent part of her childhood and primary-school years in Egypt before returning to Israel. Chalaf grew up in an artistic family: her mother is a filmmaker and artist who also worked in animation, and her father is a cinematographer. Encouraged to draw and experiment from an early age, art became a natural and significant part of her life and eventually led her to pursue formal studies in the field. Her work draws on personal experience, memory, and family relationships. Her graduation project focuses on her mother’s experience with brain cancer and on Chalaf’s own experience as a daughter living alongside her through that reality. Through her work, she seeks to give form to fear, love, uncertainty, and the changes affecting them both, expressing experiences that can be difficult to articulate in words.
